The best 10 free antiviruses in 2016

The threat of being infected by a virus or malware is bigger and bigger. There are diferent type of viruses, some of them can steal your personal information and data.
Most people prefer to have paid antivirus software, but there are people who have free antiviruses. If you are looking for free antivirus, here is a list of the top 10.

Best Free Antivirus Software Of 2016 for computer virus protection:

10. FortiClient

Platform: Windows XP or higher; Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) or higher; iOS 5.1 or higher; Android 4.0(ICS) or higher
FortiClient is an effective and efficient top Free Antivirus which boasts of web filtering, a firewall, network optimization and parental controls. It also provides very good phishing detection and even includes a VPN Client. With no per-seat license fees, FortiClient with its on-access /resident protection enables users & guests to work efficiently anywhere, without compromising on their security.
Although it’s designed to work with a network appliance, FortiClient 5.0 also functions as a standalone antivirus, with parental control and VPN client thrown in. Although the network optimization seems only to be effective for FortiGate Devices and it is also less effective at blocking certain malicious URL’s. Moreover, the functions of the VPN Client and Parental Control system are also limited.

9. AdAware Free Antivirus

Platform: Windows XP or higher
Lavasoft’s AdAware has been a pretty reliable spyware tool. It offers smooth installation, non-intrusive notifications along with detailed  custom scanning. The UI of the latest version has  been vastly improved as compared to the  previous version. Several features have been  incorporated such as Sandbox emulation, scheduler, and a command line scanner. That being said there is a lot of scope for  development of the rootkit detection and phishing protection provided by the Antivirus.
Trying to meet the expectation of the users, Lavasoft gave Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ 11 a total user-interface makeover and a new antivirus engine partner. The new UI looks pleasant with a nice change. But looks like the product lost a little ground in malware blocking. Adaware free antivirus made it to the 9th position in the list of best free antivirus for 2016.

8. Qihoo  360 Total Security

Platform: Windows XP or higher (Windows 10); Mac OS X 10.7 or later including OS X Yosemite; Android 2.2 and Up
Based in China, Qihoo 360 offers a wide range of comprehensive, effective and user-friendly Internet and mobile security products aiming to protect the user’s computer and mobile devices against malware and malicious websites. Supported by cloud-based security technology, the 360 sets itself apart from all other best Free Antivirus software through the usage of three different AV engines comprising of Qihoo’s very own ‘checksum-based’ engine; a machine learning QVM engine and a BitDefender local engine. These comprise Qihoo’s own ‘checksum-based’ engine in the cloud; a machine learning QVM engine. It provides a sandbox too through which one can check out for the threats posed by unknown programs. The program lacks out in providing a parental control system, Firewall or Backup facility.
Though Qihoo 360 Total Security Essential scores very well on hands-on tests and in tests by independent labs, but only if you change its default configuration to enable all antivirus engines since some of its features need to be enabled manually.

7. Comodo Antivirus

Platform: Windows XP or higher (Windows 10); Mac OS X 10.4 or above; Android 2.2 and Up
If you are one of the antivirus users who are intimidated of using technical computer inputs or afraid of the complexities of an antivirus which works more manually than automatically then, this Comodo antivirus is not for you. If we had to rate this antivirus upon the usage by the advanced computer users then surely this antivirus has galloped better positions. But, on the range of the overall scenarios, Comodo still need to automate more of its security features.
The Comodo Antivirus includes a full range of detection engines for viruses, rootkits, spyware and other malware. It uses Comodo’s proprietary Defense+ technology thereby guarding your system of all unknown files by treating them as a threat. It also provides On-Access/Resident protection, cloud-based protection, and an automatic sandboxing function. Since the program occasionally asks for User input it may not be suitable for amateur users. The Host Intrusion Prevention System and phishing protection still have a long way to go.

 6. Avira Free Antivirus

Platform: Windows XP or above; Mac OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) or higher; Android 2.2 or up;
Ranked as one of the best amongst the best Free Antivirus software, Avira boasts of exceptional detection and blocking rates. Its small footprint makes it ideal even for older PC’s. Offering seamlessly fast scans it also boasts of anti-malware protection, anti-spyware protection, browser protection and cloud-based scanning as well. Although one could find the interface too cluttered and the installation and execution process to be quite slow as compared to other Free Antivirus software.
According to AV-TEST testing company, one of the best antivirus testing websites from Germany, Avira offers the strongest protection against both widespread and zero-day malware. But you might see a performance impact on your PC with this antivirus if your RAM is too less. But, Avira Free Antivirus’ effectiveness against malware and a good range of features — including a mobile portal and child-safety settings — make it the best choice for family PC.

5. MalwareBytes

Platform: Windows XP or higher
Malwarebytes is one of the most widely acclaims and highly appreciated malware detection solution. It is pretty small, lightweight and doesn’t require signatures as well. It also shields Java and perhaps is one of the most effective software against zero-day attacks that have never been seen before. One of the best features of MalwareBytes is the behaviour-based detection of the virus on a PC.
The biggest drawback with it is the requirement for proactive antivirus software that can work alongside it. It just acts as a complement to your regular antivirus program. There is also a major lack of features in the free version as compared to the Premium version. But that being said, Malwarebytes still is one of the premier and most reliable products when it comes to catching the newest, most cutting-edge threats that other antivirus companies may not have caught yet.

4. AVG Antivirus

Platform: Windows XP or higher; Mac OSX Mountain Lion or Later
Definitely, AVG antivirus is one of the most popular best Free Antivirus software, AVG needs no reckoning. Furthermore, the 2016 version has been revamped to provide a better user interface, a cloud-based scanning system and the ability to block infected links besides the usual detection and eradication of viruses. It is also one of the smallest Antiviruses and also provides script malware protection. Besides, protection against the malware, it also provides website ratings which make makes it easier for a user to decide if the website is safer to access or not.
The excess of advertisements may prove to be irksome. Phishing protection could be improved as well.

3. Avast Free Antivirus

Platform: Windows XP or above; Almost all Mac OSX versions
Avast Free Antivirus is known for its friendly interface, good performance and unique, if relatively sophisticated, set of features. However, only a friendly design not sufficient for ranking higher in terms of antivirus protection or extra features. However, you may want to consider Avast Free Antivirus if you already use other Avast products, such as Avast Free Mobile Security for Android.

2. BitDefender Antivirus Free Edition

Platform: Windows XP or up; Android 2.3 or up
The BitDefender Free Antivirus is one of the most unobtrusive antivirus available on the Internet today. It provides for a Real-time Shield, Active Virus Control, Intrusion Detection, Rootkit scanning and HTTP scanning as well. The newly introduced feature of Profiles, which adapt the software for particular tasks like watching movies, playing games or general office work has improved its user-friendliness by a huge margin as compared to the previous versions. Moreover, it even includes online banking protection, a 2 way firewall and a parental control system. Although, poor technical support combined with the difficulties faced in installing on systems that are already infected by malware may cause problems to the average user.  Its tiny main window and unobtrusive style are great if you want a strong, silent, and free antivirus solution. It hardly lets its presence felt over the computer and provides best computer virus protection.
It’s time to tell you about the best free antivirus solution for Windows

1. Panda Cloud Antivirus Free

Platform: Windows XP or above; Android 2.3 or up
The Panda Cloud Antivirus takes Free Antivirus to a whole new level with its cloud-based scanner. The software is also lightweight and runs on a local cache when the network is unavailable. It offers effective phishing protection and impressive detection rates combined with top-notch rootkit blocking. With features like On-Demand malware scan, On-Access Malware scan, Phishing protection and malicious URL blocking, it does not only provide protection against different kinds of malware on a PC but also provides the best protection against the online transaction. Only not-so-positive side of this antivirus is that it will auto-quarantine files which it believes to be dangerous.
Editor’s Recommendation: I would prefer Avast over other free antivirus hands down. The plethora of features that it boasts of sets it apart from all others. Effortless installation, an all-encompassing heuristic search engine and on access protection pack quite a punch. Its features such as real-time protection of files, email, P2P transfers, web surfing, instant messages and even suspicious behavior are a notch above your average Free Antivirus software. It has been praised for its performance and light use of system resources and has also proved itself efficient in catching malware as well. Further developments made in the 2015 version to enhance the user interface merit Avast its place on the top of our list.

If you think that another antivirus should be added in the list of the top 10 free antiviruses tell us in the comments below.

5 Myths About Phone Charging that aren't true

Today most of us has a smartphone. We use it for many things for example: making selfies, taking photos, listening music, accessing our facebook accounts, messenger, e-mail account and for other stuff.

Often when we need our smartphone for something, the battery dies. Then we become mad to the phone. We must charge the phone batteries every day, because the battery isn't like the batteries on the old Nokia's phones, charge it once and will last a week.

There are lots of myths about charging our smartphones, so in this post I will tell you 5 of them that aren't true.

Myth 1:Don't use your smartphone while it;s on charge.

Truth: You can use your smartphone while it's on charge, as long as you're using a quality charger that's in good condition. In other words, as long as you're not using a sketchy third-party charger, you can use it all you want. If you are using the manufacturer-approved charger and battery, you should be fine.

Myth 2: Using non-brand or off-brand chargers will destroy your smartphone battery.

Truth: To an extent! While non-brand or white-label brands are good, it's the inexpensive knockoff chargers that you must avoid at all costs. The bottom line is that if the charger is sold in a reputable store, then it's safe (all non-brand chargers are approved by a governing body). Please note that while off-brand chargers are obviously not as good as the official thing, but it works just fine. However, knockoffs hardly even get the job done.

Myth 3: Don't leave your smartphone charging all night, as it kills the battery.

Truth: Your smartphone is smarter that you think. Once it's fully charged it stops charging. That means the battery isn't even in use at all. Your battery life will last longer if you keep your smartphone charged between 40% and 80%.

Myth 4: Switching your smartphone off is good for your battery.

Turth: Even machine need breaks like humans. In order to maximize battery life, experts agree that turning your smartphone off at least once a week help preserves your smartphone battery, especialy when you go to bed at night.

Myth 5: Don't charge your smartphone until it's completly dead.

Truth: Waiting until your smartphone is dead before recharging is called a 'deep charge', which is actually bad for your battery. Instead, charge your battery as it reaches 40%. Your battery has a finite number of charge cycles, and everytime it completly died, that's another cycle out the window.

In addition to the above, also note that heat will ruin a battery. Lithium-ion batteries heat themselves, and get hotter while they're being charged. Similary, extreme cold weather conditions can also have a negative impact on a smartphone's life, and a cold battery will die faster than usual in low temperatures.

Your smartphone will be safe if you keep it within its recommended tempertures;

Samsung guarantees that its smartphones can function anywhere between -4 and 122 degrees. On the other hand, Apple says that 32 degrees Fahrenheit is the lowest recommended temperature for an iPhone's environment.

Techquickie has a pretty neat video that explains some of these myths in detail.

Big wooden circle discovered, just few kilometres away from Stonehenge

Last year the main pages of the mediums were inundated with discovering on giant circle structure, about five times bigger than Stonehenge, just 3.2 kilometres on north-east from Stonehenge - that the scientists called it "Super Stonehenge".

In that time, the scientists discovered something that they considered to be 90 stone monoliths buried Neolitic settlement called "Durington Walls", but further researches showed that the huge "Super Stonehenge" is actually made of wood. For some reason it was quickly buried.

Scientists are still filling in the gaps, but consider that this excavation could be evidence of violent religious and political climate at the time of construction - about 4,500 years ago.

Superhenge for first time was discovered with geophysical surveying instead of a real excavation, which proved huge monoliths buried in a circular structure about 500 meters in diameter. The picture below is presented as it might seem.

But now, after having made a real excavations, they have not found any evidence of stone slabs, but they found some 120 large pits that were probably placed trees. Till now are excavated only two containing evidence of trees that have been vertically raised and removed at some stage of construction.

What is particularly surprising about the locality is that the circle was never completed, because it seems that shortly before it was ended, someone uprooted the wooden columns and hastily buried the holes. The circular structure that today can be seen seems to have been built to bury it underneath, that suggests a new mode that literally wanted to bury the past.

Archaeologists also found a tool - a shovel that was buried at the bottom of the hole.

Further researches are needed, and the excavation of a much larger number of such pits for researchers to be able to submit their hypothesis about what they think that really happened. It's possible that the locality reflect the passage of Great Britain from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age.

The stone blocks are found in Neolithic locality known as Darlington walls and date back more than 4,500 years ago and they are found buried less than a meter in the ground. Scientists in the UK currently use scanning technology to create an underground map of the area.

Till now there are identified 30 stones that reach up to 4.5 m. together with fragments or bases in 60 other stones. Considering the size, archaeologists called this Super Stonehenge area, suggesting that it could be five times larger than Stonehenge. They believe that was built at the same time as Stonehenge, and perhaps earlier.

The results are published in the British Science Festival at the University of Bradford.

The Latest WhatsApp Update For iPhone Brings Voicemail Feature

Recently, the world’s most popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp added basic formatting including bold, italic and strike-through to text messages, as well as a hidden font and Olympic-themed emoji.

Now, WhatsApp has officially rolled out its voicemail feature to its iPhone app after it appeared in the beta version of Android last month. WhatsApp for iPhone v2.16.8 lists the new feature in the change log of its App Store listing.

The Facebook-owned company describing the feature said, “When placing a WhatsApp call, you now quickly leave a voice message if your call isn’t answered, just like voicemail.”

In the new update, if your contacts are unable to take your call, it will be able to leave a voicemail for one of your contacts. If your WhatsApp call goes unanswered or is rejected, you now have the option to leave a voice message by holding down the new Voice Message button.
Once you have finished recording your message, just lift your finger from the screen and the voice message will be sent to your contact. This will appear in your active WhatsApp conversation with the caller.
Further, if you wish to cancel the voice mail message, you just need to slide your finger to the left. However, please note that as of now, there is no way of listening to your message after you have recorded it.
WhatsApp uses the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), which allows its users make calls to contacts worldwide, making it much cheaper than traditional landline communication.
So, how do you use the feature? Try placing a WhatsApp call. If the intended recipient declines or ignores the call, users will be presented with three options – Voice Message, Call Again, and Cancel. Yes, the same options were visible in the WhatsApp for Android beta app last month – with minor differences, it said “Call back” and “Record voice message” on Android.
As before, the Cancel option closes the new screen that users see after a call is ignored or declined. The Call Again option lets users call back the person who just cut or ignored their call. Voice Message, as we mentioned, works just like a regular voice message – users have to hold to record, and once they are done, the message will be shown in the chat conversation between users and their recipients just like a voice message. It’s not yet known when the feature will roll out to users of the public Android app.
The hugely-successful messenger is also testing out the ability to make video calls, similar to Facebook Messenger, Skype or FaceTime. Currently, video calls are being tested in a beta version available on Android.
Among the other rumoured new features that are expected to be released in the near future include the option for users to send GIFs to each other.
The latest WhatsApp update on iOS is available to download from the App Store.

5 most dangerous computer viruses of all time

Computer viruses can be dreadful that might cause extensive damage to your innocent device. It can significantly disrupt your system’s performance and has the potential to wipe out everything on your hard disk.

So, what is a computer virus? A computer virus is a malware program that, when executed, replicates by inserting copies of itself (possibly modified) into other computer programs, data files, or the boot sector of the hard drive. When this replication succeeds, the affected areas are then said to be “infected”, making your device helpless and sick.
Also, ever since people could write code there have been individuals known as hackers who have sought to make that code malicious in nature. While some pranksters created virus-like programs for large computer systems, it was really the introduction of the personal computer that brought computer viruses to the public’s attention.
Computer viruses have inundated the computer user for a long time now. Here are five most dangerous computer viruses of all time:

1. ILOVEYOU

This was perhaps the most dangerous computer virus ever created that in the form of a worm — it was a standalone program capable of replicating itself. Known as ILOVEYOU, this virus initially traveled the Internet by e-mail and managed to crash PCs all across the world. To make it even more alluring, the subject of the e-mail said that the message was a love letter from a secret admirer. An attachment in the e-mail was what caused all the trouble. The original worm had the file name of LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs. The moment someone opened the file, the virus emailed itself to the first 50 contacts available in the PC’s Windows address book. The virus caused a total damage of around $10 billion affecting almost 10% of the world’s PCs connected to the Internet.

2. Melissa

Melissa was the first mass-mailing macro virus for the new age of e-mailing which became the breaking news across the world on March 26, 1999. Based on a Microsoft Word macro and built by David L, Melissa was spread in the form of an email attachment by the name “list.doc.” When the attachment was clicked upon, the virus replicates itself and seeks for the Microsoft Outlook address book to e-mail itself to the first 50 names on the list with a message, “Here is that document you asked for…don’t show anyone else. ;-)” Later on, FBI arrested David L and slapped him with a fine of $5000 for unleashing the fastest virus of its time.

3. My Doom

My Doom explored its way to the malware world on 26th January 2004 and sent a shockwave around the world, as it scattered exponentially via e-mail through email with random addresses of senders and subject lines. My Doom destroyed the cyber world by activating a tremendous denial of service attack that infected close to about two million PCs. It transmitted itself in a particularly deceitful manner through e-mail as what receiver would first reckon to be a bounced error message as it reads “Mail Transaction Failed.” But, as soon as the message is clicked upon, the attachment is executed and the worm is transferred to email addresses found in the user’s address book. The damage caused by this fastest-spreading mass mailer worm was a whopping $38 billion.

4. Code Red

It debuted in late 2001 taking advantage of the Microsoft Internet Information Server’s flaw. The variations of the virus plagued the Internet for several months. The interesting thing about this deadly virus is, it did not require you to open an e-mail attachment or run a file; it just required an active Internet connection with which it ruined the Web page that you opened by displaying a text “Hacked by Chinese!” And in less than a week’s time, “Code Red” brought down more than 400,000 servers including the White House web server. This virus caused a total damage of approximately $2.6 billion dollars by hitting almost one million PCs.

5. Sasser

The 2004 worm virus affected Windows OS primarily, and was devastating to many critical infrastructures. It didn’t spread through e-mail unlike other viruses. Instead, once the virus infected a computer, it looked for other vulnerable systems. It contacted those systems and instructed them to download the virus. The virus would scan random IP addresses to find potential victims. The virus also altered the victim’s operating system in a way, making it even hard to reset without cutting the power. Sasser functioned by attacking the security controller Local Security Authority Subsystem Service, as it had a buffer overflow vulnerability. The worm affected hospitals, public transportation, airlines, news agencies and much more. After one million infections, there was an estimated 18 billion dollars in damage recorded.

Nokia to release two Android Nougat smartphones with Snapdragon 820 processor and more

Ever since the first press renders of Nokia P1 Android smartphones were leaked, the tech world is eagerly awaiting more news about them. And we have some good news. Nokia is making not one but two smartphones which will run Google’s latest Android Nougat operating system.
According to the latest reports, two Nokia Android smartphones will be made by Finland’s HMD Global. The reports suggest that the smartphones might be available to buyers before the end of this year.
The reports also suggest that Nokia will bring out two versions, one with 5.2-inch display and the other with 5.5-inch display. Both the Nokia Android smartphones will sport 2K resolution (QHD) displays and will come with IP68 certification, which effectively means they will be highly resistant to water and dust on the similar lines to phones like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Galaxy S7.
Another report by Gizmo China suggests that both the Nokia Android smartphones will be powered by Snapdragon 820 chipset and will come with Z-Launcher System UI based on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat.
What will impress most buyers awaiting the Nokia Android smartphones is that the upcoming smartphones will have an all metal body and feature an OLED screen. Both the smartphones will also have fingerprint scanners. The report says that “the sensors on these two smartphones may be most sensitive ever and will be based upon Nokia’s extensive research on wonder material graphene.”
Nokia Power User websites says that both the Nokia Android smartphones will be available towards the end of 2016 but adds that their launch date will be dependent on testing and development of the phones and might move to first quarter of 2017.
Readers may remember that in May this year, Nokia said that it has granted the newly-established HMD Global, the exclusive global license to create and sell Nokia-branded mobile phones and tablets for the next 10 years.
Nokia was the erstwhile king of smartphone and mobile business and looking at the features, the upcoming smartphones sure look to regain that top spot for Nokia again.
